The journey of Hindi cinema began with Dadasaheb Phalke's silent film Raja Harishchandra in 1913. Since then, the industry has evolved from mythological tales and social dramas of the "Golden Age" (1940s–1960s) to the "Angry Young Man" era of the 1970s, personified by Amitabh Bachchan. In the late 20th century, the industry shifted toward high-budget romantic musicals, which became its signature global export.
