The casting process itself had its own share of drama. Wentworth Miller was cast on Prison Break just one week before filming began. He initially came to the attention of executive producer Brett Ratner after auditioning for the role of Superman in an aborted film project, "Flyby". Stacy Keach, who played Warden Pope, brought a unique authenticity to the role: the actor had spent six months in a British jail in the 1980s on a drug charge and based his performance as Pope on his memory of his own real-life prison warden, lending an unexpected layer of truth to the character.
