Play your movie and find a line of dialogue that's clearly out of sync. Pause the movie at the exact moment the character starts speaking. Write down this video timestamp (e.g., 00:15:23 ). Now, look at your subtitle file. Find that same dialogue line and note its start time (e.g., 00:15:25 ). The difference is your offset.

The good news? Below, we show you how to find it and fix it if it drifts.

VLC allows you to shift subtitle timing on the fly using your keyboard.

What are you using? (VLC, MX Player, a smart TV?) What is the file format of your movie? (MKV, MP4?) Exactly how many seconds is the text lagging behind?

Before we get into the solution, let’s understand the problem. Dilwale was released in Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu, but not originally in Malayalam. While many Malayalis understand Hindi, a large section of the audience—especially families and older viewers—prefers subtitles in their mother tongue to catch every dialogue, joke, and emotional beat.
