Directed by Sudhendu Roy and based on the Bengali story Ras by Narendranath Mitra, Saudagar is a poignant drama set in rural India. The film follows Moti (played by Amitabh Bachchan), a smooth-talking trader who collects and sells date palm juice ( gur ). To maximize his profits, he marries Mahaju (played by Nutan), a widow exceptionally skilled at preparing the juice, only to discard her once he achieves financial success.
