Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy (Factitious Disorder Imposed on Another)
This dynamic allows Sharp Objects to critique the toxic expectations placed on women in aristocratic Southern society. Adora’s house is a shrine to perfection, but it is also a prison. Her daughters, Camille and Amma, are dolls to be dressed and displayed. The tragedy of the novel is that Adora’s need to be needed results in the systematic destruction of her children. Amma, the youngest sister, represents the terrifying result of this upbringing: a girl who learns that violence is the only way to navigate a world controlled by a monstrous mother.
